In this edition of “Small Business Breakthroughs” we will cover how to launch a new product or invention with Product Commercialization Consultant, Jeff Shick. Jeff will discuss the steps you should take to launch and commercialize new products. The session will cover what you should consider and the steps required to go from product idea to prototype to manufacturing. We will also outline what you should know relating to intellectual property protection, such as patents and trademarks.

Jeff Shick

Jeff Shick has more than 30 years of experience in product development, technology-based economic development, commercialization, and management development. First working in Ohio, then across the country in 43 states, as well as at the federal government and international levels, he has contributed to the evolution of public policy, program design, and evaluation for in programs that have become known to many as “technology-based economic development.” With visits to thousands of businesses, laboratories countless places of innovation, he brings insights and vast experiences to the space of innovation to change the economy.

Mr. Shick has worked within government, academia, and nonprofit entities, always dedicated to helping a new idea find root in the economy; to help manufacturers and other wealth creators compete and grow. He previously served as Director of the Ohio Technology Transfer Organization, as Director of the Commercialization Center for the National Technology Transfer Center, and led the Industrial Extension Agent training efforts to build out the NIST Manufacturing Extension Centers. He was a key resource to the strategic planning and skills training for the Ohio Small Business Development Centers that resulted in the nation’s first competitively designated “Technology SBDC” credential from the Small Business Administration. During his career, he has worked with hundreds of inventors and lent support to the creation of federal laboratory technology commercialization systems for the United State Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Air Force, the Navy, NASA, and other government-operated and company-operated commercialization programs.

Michael Bowers

Michael Bowers is a business consultant and Director of the Ohio Small Business Development Center at Columbus State. Michael works closely with entrepreneurs and business owners assisting them in building their companies. He has a diverse business skill set with experience in banking, private equity, strategic planning, digital media and marketing.
